Chapter 9 – Amy

This was just her luck. The minute she was finally starting to claw her way out of the misery that had gripped her for almost a fortnight, here he was again. It was some small satisfaction that he at least had the good grace to look embarrassed—but when he turned to try to leave and jarred his neck, she felt her professional sympathies being engaged. Before she could stop herself, Amy ordered him to sit down, determined to get to the bottom of what was ailing him. Purely professional, of course. It had nothing to do with how she felt … oh, who was she kidding?

Cora would have been furious if she’d been here. Amy had been leaning hard on her best friend since the night of the opening ceremony, when she’d called her, forcing back tears. Cora had come straight to her apartment from the other side of the Olympic Village, and they’d finished a whole bottle of wine together.

“I just feel so stupid,” she kept saying, embarrassed that she was still crying, that he’d had this much of an effect on her after knowing him for such a short time. Cora kept hushing her, shaking her head, anger blazing on her face.

“You’re not stupid. He’s an asshole. There’s a big difference.”

She’d been so grateful to have Cora by her side over the next few weeks. Without her friend’s stalwart support, she might have given in and sent Harrison a long email telling him exactly what she thought of his behavior. How dare he? How dare he seduce her like that—she hated that word with a passion, hated the implication it carried that she’d been tricked somehow, hoodwinked into caring for him enough to go home with him. The worst part was how good it had felt to have sex with him … no matter how angry she was, she couldn’t deny that she’d never felt anything like that in her life. But what did it matter? Good sex didn’t mean he was a good person—especially when all of his behavior since had made it clear that he was quite the opposite.

Oh, sure, he sent her a few messages—friendly, professional messages that didn’t even acknowledge what had transpired between them. She took them straight to Cora, and the two of them had commiserated over another bottle of wine, and her friend had helped her draft ice-cold responses to his messages. Oh, he wanted to keep things professional? She could keep things professional. That had been all she’d ever wanted in the first place. Amy had never felt this angry in her life. It was scaring her a little, if she was honest … but what made it worse was the dreams.

Every night, as though her subconscious was actively trying to torture her, she would fall fast asleep and dream about Harrison. In her dreams, somehow she’d forgotten how he’d wronged her, forgotten that he was a manipulative, sex-obsessed womanizer … he was a different person altogether in her dreams.
